How to prepare for a finance interview
June 19, 2026
Finance interviews reward precision. Whether it's FP&A, accounting, or analysis, expect technical questions, a modelling or case task, and behavioral questions about rigor.
Master the three statements
Know cold how the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow connect — the classic "walk me through what happens when depreciation increases by 10" should be automatic. Practise until it's reflexive.
Be exact, then explain
Finance interviewers test attention to detail. State the number and the assumption behind it. If you're unsure, say what you'd check rather than guessing — sloppy confidence is a red flag.
The case / modelling task
For a forecast or a "should we invest in X" case, structure it: assumptions → calculation → recommendation → risks. A clear, defensible answer beats a complex one you can't explain.
Behavioral: rigor and ownership
Prepare a story about catching an error, meeting a tight close, or handling conflicting numbers. They want to trust you with the books.
