How to evaluate a company before you say yes

July 1, 2026

You spend a third of your waking life at work. Accepting an offer without vetting the company is how good candidates end up in bad jobs. Interviews are your chance to investigate, not just to be investigated.

Ask the questions that reveal culture

"What does success look like in this role at 90 days?" tells you if expectations are clear. "Why is this position open?" surfaces churn. "How are decisions made when people disagree?" shows you the real power structure. Vague or defensive answers are data.

Watch how they treat your time

Chaotic scheduling, interviewers who didn't read your CV, or a process that drags for months without communication all predict how you'll be treated as an employee. The interview is the company on its best behavior — believe what you see.

Check the outside view

Read recent reviews, look at how long people stay on LinkedIn, and ask to speak with a potential peer, not just managers. If everyone on the team joined in the last six months, ask why.

Trust the pattern, not the pitch

Every company will sell you a mission. Look instead for consistency between what different people tell you and whether their answers match reality. A great offer at a company you can't trust is not a great offer.
